The Use of K-W-L Technique in Teaching Reading Descriptive

This study examined the use of K-W-L technique in teaching reading descriptive text to first grade students of a senior high school in Bandung and to investigate the students’ responses toward the use of K-W-L technique in teaching reading descriptive text. This study used quasi experimental design. The study involved two classes of first grade students of a senior high school in Bandung as the purposive sample. The data were obtained through pre-test, post-test and questionnaire. The findings were analyzed statistically using independent t-test, dependent t-test procedure and open ended questionnaire procedure.

The findings showed that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results, as indicated by the statistical result of pre-test scores (M=49.47) and post-test scores (M=76.40). Furthermore, tobtained (2.633) > tcritical (2.000), r = 0.326. According to the findings, it can be concluded that K-W-L technique improves students’ reading comprehension especially in reading descriptive text.

In addition, the factor that influenced the improvement of the use K-W-L technique was also supported by students’ responses in the questionnaire. Most of students gave positive responses toward the use of K-W-L technique in teaching reading descriptive text. The use of K-W-L technique give some benefit for them such as; using K-W-L technique can help students to collect information they know before they come into a reading assignment, can help students create a connection between their prior knowledge with new information, and make them feel free and comfortable to express their opinions. The study is expected to give a contribution to the teaching English especially in teaching reading.  

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian untuk menguji penggunaan teknik K-W-L dalam pembelajaran membaca teks deskriptif pada siswa kelas pertama di salah satu SMA di Bandung dan untuk mengetahui tanggapan siswa terhadap penggunaan teknik K-W-L dalam pembelajaran membaca teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini menggunakan eksperimen semu (quasi experimental design). Data diperoleh melalui pre-test, post-test dan kuesioner. Hasil penemuan dianalisis secara statistik menggunakan prosedur independent t-test, dependent t-test dan prosedur kuesioner pernyataan terbuka.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan antara hasil pre-test dan post-test, seperti ditunjukkan oleh hasil statistik dari skor pre-test (M = 49,47) dan post-test skor (M = 76,40) dengan nilai t obtained (2,633)> t critical (2.000), r = 0,326. Dapat disimpulkan bahwa teknik K-W-L meningkatkan pemahaman bacaan siswa terutama dalam membaca teks deskriptif.

Selain itu, faktor yang mempengaruhi peningkatan dalam penggunaan teknik K-W-L didukung juga oleh tanggapan siswa dalam kuesioner. Sebagian besar siswa memberikan respon positif terhadap pemanfaatan teknik K-W-L dalam pembelajaran membaca teks deskriptif. Penggunaan teknik K-W-L memberikan beberapa keuntungan bagi mereka seperti; menggunakan teknik K-W-L dapat membantu siswa untuk mengumpulkan informasi yang mereka ketahui sebelum mereka melaksanakan tugas membaca, dapat membantu siswa membuat hubungan antara pengetahuan mereka sebelumnya dengan informasi baru, dan membuat mereka merasa bebas dan nyaman untuk mengungkapkan pendapat mereka. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi terhadap pengajaran bahasa Inggris terutama dalam pengajaran membaca.
