The Use Of Animation Videos In Teaching Writing Narrative Texts

Wednesday, August 01, 2012

This study discuses the use of series of animation videos in teaching writing narrative texts. The study is aimed at finding out the benefits of using animation videos in teaching writing narrative texts and the students’ responses toward the use of animation videos. This study is conducted based on the assumption that animation videos can help students to understand the language (Miclaus, 2001) and to be able to attract students’ attention in learning English (Richard, 2002; Harmer; 2001).

A case study design is used in this study, and the data are collected through observation, interview, and documents analysis to gain relevant data. The data from these instruments are analyzed qualitatively. The findings indicate some benefits of animation videos as follows: (1) increasing students’ motivation to participate actively in the activity, (2) increasing students’ motivation to write, (3) enhancing students’ vocabularies, (4) creating enjoyable learning atmosphere, (5) helping students to find and generate ideas, and (6) helping students to arrange generic structure of narrative text. In addition, the students’ responses toward the use of animation videos in teaching writing narrative texts are positive. Based on the findings in this study, it can be concluded that animation videos give positive influence on the students’ writing process. For that reason, animation videos are recommended to be applied as teaching media in teaching writing narrative texts.
